5 Things I’ve learnt from starting a job in finance

  1. It’s quite easy that, unknowingly, it can become a personality trait (aka. the herd mentality of quarter zips, Pret coffees and shareholder value)

  2. There’s so much m o n e y 💸

  3. You don’t need to have studied business/economics - quite a few companies now look for an adaptable mindset and divergent thinking instead

  4. Hybrid working is lovely. We have ‘anchor days’ Tuesdays and Wednesdays where we need to be in the office, the rest of the time I WFH (work from home) with my Mum and cat, Jasmine 🤍

  5. Like with most opportunities in life, the more you put in the more you get out! I’ve joined the Hispanic book club (Adelante), corporate social responsibility shindigs i.e. environmental/social projects, taken advantage of their personal development fund with a Brasilian Portuguese Language course and gone to almost every social (where you get to mingle with a fully stocked bar !)

* Disclaimer : I work for a fab company called S&P Global. This company appears to be an exception in finance world as the job is a proper 9-5 and as the culture fosters a sense of belonging; enabling you to feel like a person and not a number/machine/slave. Yay!
